In the early days of the war, my father was stationed at RAF St Athan. They were on full alert but had seen no action so far. One evening the camp cinema was showing a popular film and my parents decided to risk it and go. After all, Hitler had not got that far yet. So my mother wrapped me up and left me with the lady next door. And off they went. In the middle of the film the picture suddenly disappeared and an announcement was made. "Enemy planes approaching. All personnel to report for duty immediately. Civilians to return home and take cover"
By the time they got outside the battle was in full swing. Somehow my mother got home, half crazed with worry about her baby. But all was well. I was fast asleep and unaware of the air raid. My mother spent the night next door for support and companionship.
The next morning she took me back home. She went to put me in my cot. There was a piece of shrapnel right through the pillow.
