I was evacuated at 11 years old and was lucky to find a lovely home in the above village — still in Xmas correspondence with the children I shared the house with.
One night for the first time the sirens went and there was a bit of dashing around to the house “safe area” a stone house, under the stairs. I was awoken and supposed to have said, “You do not bother to consider taking shelter, until you can see the enemy bombers and even then you look to see where the bombs are falling.” The statement somehow reached the local newspaper and in leader it stated ‘WHAT SORT OF A WORLD DO WE LIVE IN?” when a child of our time thinks dodging bombs is the normal way of life. Looking back a fair comment.
Like most of my age I joined the ATC, couldn’t wait until I was 17 to volunteer for Aircrew Training! Looking back — how stupid I was!
