My husband was in the Normandy Invasion. He was in the army and went out on DDay. He went out at a minutes notice with no chance to say goodbye. I used to do first aid night shifts and be on hand in case anyone was injured. When he joined up we were already engaged. We'd met at a dance. We were married in 1943 - a white wedding in church. We booked the date but my husband had been posted to Castle Donington by this time and had trouble getting the time off but luckily managed it. The reception was in a local hotel. I had 2 bridesmaids. Their mum bought the material for their dresses with coupons. We had fresh salmon and people gave us their fruit ration for the cake. Our honeymoon was in a family bungalow by the River Severn.
