My sister and I lived with my parents over a butchers shop which my father managed on Regent Road. The night of the blitz we were in the cellar trying to keep safe. My Uncle was with us because he worked in the shop. Suddenly my mother said she wanted to go into the fridge because she felt we were sitting ducks. The fridge was large and walk in. So my Dad unplugged the fridge and we all huddled together inside.

After a few minutes the shop took a direct hit and the only thing left standing was the fridge! We were very cold when they finally dug us out, but we survived. I was three at the time and my sister was four. Nobody could believe we had survived because all that was left was a load of rubble and that magical fridge!
