One afternoon during the war my mother was visiting a friend opposite her house. She said goodbye to her and started to cross the road back home. Just at that moment a German fighter plane suddenly flew straight down the middle of the road with machine guns blazing. She was absolutely terrified and ran as never before up the front path and safely into her house.
Many years later two trees near the front wall were cut down and our friend Reg, a cabinet maker, took one of them to work to slice open with a power saw. As the trunk spilt open he was amazed to see that straight down the middle were a line of machine gun bullets, obviously fired by the German plane.
The trees had saved mother's life as she dashed across the road and lived to tell the tale.
