The night was dark and dreary, the atmosphere most glum,
Pay day seemed so far away, and thoughts of home were strong,
We tried to pool our pennies, a cup of tea to buy,
The NAAFI wasn’t far away, to get there we would try.
On stand-by duty we all were, mustn’t wander far away,
With this in mind, we donned our coats, knowing we could not stay,
We hadn’t got far, when the sirens wailed, this stopped us in our tracks,
So turn again Dick Whittington, making our way back.
The tannoy in our billet said, ‘stand by girls’ be steady
The jeep will be there right away, in no time, so be ready.
Our jobs would be to convey Crews down runways to their planes,
And back again for more Air crews, we had all been very well trained.
Our hearts were beating wildly, as we continued with all our might,
All thoughts of ‘cups of tea’ had gone, as we worked through the night,
The time flew by quite quickly, as the ‘all clear’ we did hear,
Our gallant Air Crews worked so hard, to drive away all fear.
Our work complete, it was back to bed, for a couple of hours or so,
Certainly it was team work, and our efforts seemed to show,
Before you go girls, come in here, said the Sgt who was I/C,
Yes, you’ve guessed it, pleased we were, to have that ‘cup of tea’
