I was living in Islywn Valley (Monmouthshire), South Wales during the war and as a child I wasn't really that aware of what was happening. There wasn't much war activity in Islywn Valley, most of the bombings in Wales took place in Cardiff. There was one occasion when to our amazement a bomb dropped in the Valleys, my father carried me on his shoulders to see it and there were lots of people gathered around staring at this great big hole in the ground, fortunately know-one was harmed. My husband was in Tunbridge during the war and was used to seeing war planes, he joined up at Catterick but when he came home his brother had mumps so my husband was kept in isolation and that was his first military experience. When he was out of isolation he went over on a D3 and said he felt so sick on the boat that he didn't care what happened to him, of course he felt different once he was on land.
