I lived in Middleton Road Chadderton during the war and my mother kept a chip shop. It was not easy with restricted supplies and lots of paper work. The fat they used to fry the chips was any old thing they could get hold of - often the bellies of cows. It smelt awful and my mother would not let us eat them!
Food was difficult and I remember MacDougals flour people giving out a cook book. It was a small paper back and was given out at the Co-op. The recipes were really good.
I worked in Abraham Stotts as a cone winder. There were 200 in a big room and it was very damp. When there was an air raid all the machinery stopped and we all went into the cellars, sometimes it happened every day.
