THIS IS A TRANSCRIPTION OF A PEOPLE'S WAR FEATURE THAT APPEARED ON 91热爆 SOUTH EAST TODAY ON MONDAY JULY 4 AS PART OF THE WEEK'S COMMEMORATIONS.
"There I was, New Year's Day, 1945, standing in a field at about eleven o'clock in the morning in the middle of Belgium, when one of my chaps came running up to me waving a piece of paper. He came up to me and said "Congratulations!" And when I looked at it, it said "Son born, both well". And of course, I longed then to see my son.
I wasn't able to see him until I was on leave, six months later. When I next saw him, several months after that, a fascinating thing happened when I used some cine film to record my son in his pram.
In the background is a German general inspecting his troops! You see, it was pretty obvious that the film had been exposed twice -- it had been sold to one of my chaps for cigarettes. And here we have a double exposure of my son showing how we beat the Germans -- and here he is waving the victory flag in front of them!
He was my first born, which is very special -- and not to be able to see him for months and months was of course a great hardship."
