My husband-to-be arrived home on leave and was throwing stones at the window to rouse us - when he broke one!
Grandfather wouldn't move for raids with the rest of us. One time we came back from the shelter to find him apparently headless - a blackout screen in a frame had fallen onto his shoulders, covering his head!
My aunt and uncle had a pub in Hockley and were evacuated unexpectedly after bombing when a nearby land mine didn't go off. they had to leave all the money in the tills, and a glass of tea on a tray. It was covered in dust and dirt when they were allowed back two days later
