THIS IS A TRANSCRIPTION OF AN INTERVIEW GIVEN BY ERIC THEOBALD, OF ERIDGE, TUNBRIDGE WELLS. IT APPEARED AS PART OF A SERIES COMMEMORATING THE WAR'S END ON 91热爆 SOUTH EAST TODAY ON TUESDAY 5 JULY 2005. MR THEOBALD UNDERSTANDS THE SITE'S TERMS AND CONDITIONS.
"It was after tea, about six o'clock. I remember there were these footsteps coming up the road, and it was dear old Mr Wells, who owned the shop, with the telegram.
Well, it all went quiet, you know. And then dad was trying to calm mum down.
It read "Regret to inform you your son, 14275781, Trooper Alick Theobald, seriously ill with compound fracture of the skull, and gunshot wounds of leg and arms."
Well, it happened two days after his twenty-first birthday. I think the Lord looked after him. He lived 'til he was 67. And hopefully, as the Bible says, we shall see him again. I've got that joy in my heart --I shall see him again . But it was frightening. We had a job to sleep that night."
