My mum wrote to us where we were evacuated in Wales and she said the bombing had eased up so she was going to fetch us home. But when we got there she's been bombed out so we moved to 5 Southborne Road. We used to play right by a big block of flats where the troops were being housed in Eastcliff. When the doodlebugs came over we used to run down to the 'area' (space under outside stairs) and sing, "Praise the Lord to keep the Engine Running". When the engine cut out, they'd fall you see. We wasn't bothered really, because there were so many. You'd think, "Oh, there's another one coming," and run down to the 'area'. We didn't realise how dangerous it was.
