It was a very dark Friday night, there was a blackout as usual and I was on my way to work the nightshift at Vickers Armstrong along the Scotswood Road in Newcastle.
I had met up with a group of friends who all worked the same shift as I did and we were cutting across Kendal Street as we usually did to get to Scotswood Road.
Earlier in the week some workmen had been on Kendal Street to mend some gas pipes and as a result, there was a very large hole right in the middle of the street with four lanterns marking the borders of it. Of course during the blackouts, it was very hard to see anything.
You would often hear stories about people just walking along the street during a blackout and knocking themselves out by walking into street lamps. Well, on this blackened Friday night, some kids had pelted the lights out of the four lanterns with stones, making it impossible to see that large crater lying in front of us. So, there I was walking along, talking with my friends and the next thing I knew I was lying in the bottom of this hole. One of my friends also fell in, we were both very shocked.
Two large men were able to lift us out and we were both taken to the nurse at the factory. I had hurt my knee from the fall, my friend hurt another part of her leg. She bandaged us up and that was that. We were alright really, my friend though, started weeping and crying. I couldn't understand why, I thought it was all very funny. Nevertheless it didn't get us off our shift, we still had to put in our twelve hours
