I was 18 1/2, had just started nursing training and was on the veneral disease ward for solders. I had never seen a naked man before. One of the treatments was using an implement like a small unmbrella. One inserted it into a man's penis, opened the umbrella and slid it out. This would clear out the infection. The ward was always full and new soldiers came in on a daily basis. Most of the soldiers caught the VD from abroad, largely India. It was very rare to see a soldier come in twice. On some occasions soldiers died as young as 19 or 20 as they didn't come in early enough to be treated.
