I have happy memories of my time during 1941-1946 when I was a Staff Sergeant in the ATS. I was stationed at Deerbolt Camp, Barnard Castle, Co. Durham with C Company.
When the trains arrived with many hungry soldiers I had to make sure there was a hot meal ready for them 鈥 anytime 鈥 day or night.
After my time at Co. Durham I was then sent to work with Whitby Driver Training Regiment. The ration lorry travelled to Catterick every day for supplies. Most foods were available and roast dinners were always a favourite! A German POW helped with the kitchen duties.
During this time I was billeted nearby in a big old house. I was lucky enough to have my own room as some were sharing four or five to a room. There was only one fire and little hot water, but we all just 鈥渕ucked in鈥 together and friendships that were made lasted long after the war had ended.
