Story told to Christine Barker at the VE Day Celebrations in Beverley 2005

I was evacuated to Rawcliffe near Goole it was not too good. We were billeted at a doctors and he made us eat outside in a shed, surprisingly enough, he wouldn鈥檛 let us eat with the family. Only when my dad came to visit were we allowed to eat inside with them.

I was on my own there, my older brother was in the forces and my younger brother Victor went somewhere in Lincolnshire, Goxhill I think. You were split up from your family, but you had your schoolmates with you. I was with Carter. It was not all that far from home, but you couldn鈥檛 come home.

Dad used to come through when he could; he鈥檇 just retired from customs. I was only there 5 or 6 weeks then I came home, I wouldn鈥檛 stay. I was glad to be home but we went through all the bombing in Hull after I got back which was horrendous.
