Second-hand, as related by members of the Halifax section of the Cyclists Touring Club to me in the late 1950's.
Cyclists in reserved occupations always wanted their one day off per month to be on a Sunday. This was easy to arrange as Sunday was paid at double time, and Saturday time and a half.
Cyclists were a problem to the Government as munitions were stored on grass verges of the roads in the countryside. I remember members talking to one another discussing what had been stored at various locations.
The East Lancashire road, and Tadcaster, York dual carriageways were reducted to two way traffic on one carriageway - the other was used for storage of munitions.
