I joined the WRAF at the age of 18 and got stationed at Ruislip Records Office as a Clerical Assistant. 1yr later I got transferred to the Radar establishment at Cranwell. I got moved around the country during the years and once, while working at Haleworth , I was watching my screen and saw a number of friendly aircraft enter my area. First there were a few, but then more and more aircraft filled my screen, soon the whole screen was full and still it kept going on and on. Either I have a problem with my screen or there are hundreds of aircraft leaving our area I said. How many? Someone asked, we estimated that the time it took for the screens to go clear that there were approximately 1000 bombers. We knew nothing at the time of where they were going, only that they were ours. Later we found out that it was a large raid on Germany, and that in fact our estimate of 1000 aircraft was spot on.
After the war I was moved around the country and finished up working at the old GCHQ in Cheltenham, (now known as ) The Doughnut.
