I lived in Elm Park, Filton, Bristol when war broke out. I had 3 young children under 5 so I did not have to work or be directed into industry. My husband worked at the Aero Engine school newly formed at B.A.C.

My husband also was a "Fire Watcher". One morning I opened the curtains and there was a barrage balloon in the garden. My husband did not believe me. We later found that it came from Purdown. Their huge at least 100 ft long.

There was a shortage of food and electricity. We brought a shank of beef and vegetables to boil on the stove and put the Aluminium pot into a pit we dug in the garden.
, and covered it completely with soil, it was a hot summers day and in the evening we dug it up and found it had cooked the meat and vegetables.
