During the Blitz in 1940, we had to move shelters five times due to the fires burning around us. The wardens kept coming to tell us to move on. After the air raid we went back to our house to find it had been completely bombed.
We were able to retrieve some of our belongings, but found a flag stone had come through the roof and landed in my cot.
The next day I walked to the railway station because I was being evacuated to Cornwall. Walking to the station many fires were still burning fiercely, everywhere was covered with broken chimney pots and hose pipes trying to put out the fires.
