It was ordinary village life, as far as I was concerned during the war- but things were very hard to get with the rationing. I know one shop-keeper here at Oakengates: a fruitier who also sold fresh fish and that. If she had a commodity in that was scarce, you鈥檇 got to buy something else that wasn鈥檛 scarce too.

Bananas were very, very rare; you鈥檇 have to buy, say, a tin of custard powder to be able to get your bananas.
