This story was submitted to the People's War site by Jenny Ford on behalf of Mrs. Thompson and has been added to the site with her permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

I remember I was going to school when our neighbours came out and said that war was declared. My brother in the Army and one in the Navy, worried about them but they came through safely.

We used to go in the Anderson shelter if at home at night. If it was bad we went down a shelter in Faraday Square, a big shelter where a lot of people would go. There was a bomb on the isolation hospital at the back - demolished it!

After the war you used to try and get something after work from the butcher - see what he'd got, you couldn't be choosy.
