The only man to kick the backside of his Company Sgt. Major and be thanked!

Imagine a Dakota DC9, carrying 20 paratroopers heading for a Battalion jump. In the back of their minds is a fear of 'jibbing', (refusing to jump) with the resulting punishment on return - loss of money, spell in the glasshouse and a return to unit.

On approaching the drop zone, the stick commander shouts 'Stand up - check equipment - red on - stand in the door - green on - go!!'

My Sgt Major was no.3 and I was no.4 immediately behind him. No.1 and 2 went but no.3 hesitated and froze in the door. I then planted my foot on his hindquarters and booted him out of the door!!

On return to base, my Sgt. Major called me over with a wry smile and said 'Thank you, but don't kick so hard next time!'
