I was staying with me grandfather in 39 Standen Road, Southfields, Wandsworth. My father was in the navy. We were in the only house that still had gas. The rest had electric.

I used to sit in a cupboard and eat condensed milk with a spoon. The orange juice used to run through you, but I liked the dried milk; it was creamy; I used to eat it raw. Go to the cupboard and shovel it down. That was lovely, that was. The dried eggs, I used to like that funnily enough. It鈥檚 what you make of life.
