A group of us were advancing, when we came across a big house, where we rested for a while. There were soldiers all laid out under the privet hedge and around the garden. (These men were the first line of defence that had been wiped out, all of which were dead.) We had to go next. We spent some time down a cellar. After which we set off down a slope in order to reach the town of Gock. We took Gock at 2am in the morning. We hid in a mill for a while, where we could hear the German soldiers. Our Major had been shot in the chest. He lay at the cross roads. We crawled up to a hedge to look over, where we could see three German soldiers in a trench, they held riffles in their hands. We crawled up behind the soldiers, touched them and they all fell over. The men were all dead. The Germans had stood their dead men up to make us think they were alive. we hadn't had any sleep for two days and two nights. All we had to eat and drink during this time was a 48 hour pack. The pack consisted of a cube containing tea, milk and sugar. A bottle of water which had to last for two days. (We dare not drink any water from any other source as it was often poisoned) and two bars of chocolate. One little piece would fill you up. No breakfast, dinner or tea or supper. ( I couldn't live on that now, I don't know how I did then. We were just glad that we were still alive.)
