The tip near the canal was a few hundred yards from the Pub where I lived.
We as children would follow the lorries to the tip. The Yanks were stationed on Braunstone Park and they would never use the tins with dents in, so we would search for these tins of food.
Foundry Sand was also dumped on the tip together with bits of metal (the overflow from the moulds). We used to collect the metal and sell it back to the foundries and earn some extra pennies for pocket money.
