In 1941 a landmine hit the wall of Norwich prison and the resulting blast ripped the front from our house, thus making it uninhabitable. My mother was injured and my father was blown into the gooseberry bushes. My brother and I stayed with my grandparents but when we returned we found that the house had been looted and everything of any value had been stolen. This included all the clothing, my mother's collection of lace table cloths, and most dramatic of all MY SLEDGE! To me as a child, the loss of the clothing etc. was unimportant; the sledge was.
