After a night of heavy bombing trying to hit the Salford Docks and a nearby hospital, which was hard hit, the surrounding houses were short of water, but we never found the reason. It was found that we were the only house with water. My Father, sister and myself were at work, my Mother was kept busy filling all kinds of vessels with water, not only for near neighbours, but a long queue of people from other streets. By midday she gave up and left people to help themselves. When it came time to start preparing a meal for everyone in the family, she had to ask poeople to leave, but as everyone had filled the vessels to the brim with water a lot of it had been spilled on the floor, and she was paddling in water trying to cook, and eventually she had to put on her wellington boots, as her shoes were soaking wet. We all had to smile at the sight of her cooking in wellington boots. The queue of people went on until very late at night when we had to start again mopping up the kitchen before going to bed.
