It was mid-day as we were sitting in the dining room having lunch. We heard a German plane go over - the siren had not gone. By that time we were well versed between German and English planes. The siren went and we heard the plane again and then heard machine gunning. It was the first time I'd heard it, but it was quite unmistakable. A little later the ambulances started to come up and we were horrified to learn that primary school children running to the shelter had been machine gunned. I nursed a couple of the boys that had been injured.
