When we used to sail across to the Isle of Man, there were constant warnings against throwing anything, especially food, overboard.

Not like today, because of environmental reasons, but because sea birds would be attracted and would develop the habit of following ships ... and this would make it easy for U-boats to see ships. They would follow the birds and be drawn to a target.
