I was 9 years old when the war started. My father was a gunner in the HAA and stationed at Wanstead Flat, East London.
In 1944, my father Alfred Payne was stationed at Dover as gunner in the HAA. My doctor, (Dr Tee of Wycham Avenue) said that Eric Payne age fourteen, was ill and pining for his father. The doctor got my father compassionate leave to come home to see me.
He was home for ten days and when he returned to his unit at Dover he found all his mates on his gun had been blown to pieces.
