Winnie was 18 when the war started. At this time, she worked in a perfume factory near her home in Croydon. She recalls returning home one night and meeting her mother outside her house and saying to her, 鈥渨hat are all those black things in the sky?鈥 Fortunately, Winnie鈥檚 mum realised they were bombs and they both rushed in to the coal cellar. It鈥檚 not really surprising that Winnie should look in wonderment, as that was the first air raid on London. Winnie recalls being very, very frightened and that the air raid sirens went off AFTER the raid had finished!
