During the war, my father, who was in the navy, didn鈥檛 like my mother to see him off at North Road Railway Station. However, towards the end of 1944, Mother got her own way and took me (then aged about 4 陆 years) to see him off at the station. There were lots of womenfolk there, naturally, all of them were practising 鈥渟tiff upper-lipism鈥.
As the train pulled out I yelled in that small boy鈥檚 voice that carries for 戮 mile on a good day 鈥淚鈥檝e got no daddy now!鈥
End of British resolve. The collective hours of dismay were something to behold.
