When the Italians surrendered to the Allied Forces, the Germans blew up the casks of red wine causing the streets to look like rivers of blood as it ran down them. Some of the troops, especially some foteh Scottish regiments, used their enamel pots to scoop it up out of the gutter and drink it. After that it didn't take long for orders were sent out to everybody forbidding this to happen because there was a worry that the Germans might have poisoned it.
