Air raid sirens had gone off. One morning I got up, the all clear had gone and I went outside to play 'hopscotch', etc. There I saw a great big metal round thing. The nose was in the ground everything lose was up in the air. I started drawing flowers on it till my mum came out grabbed me and took me inside. I was 7 or 8 at the time. Mum got the ARP, who got the bomb squad. A jeep arrived with 4 men with visors; she was scared because she couldn't see their faces. The whole area was cleared. The bomb squad had just been at the railway station which had been hit, but not badly damaged as the embankment had been hit. The bomb squad identified the bomb as a dud, made it safe and took it away. It had landed just outside the backyard. Hers was the only house in that block with a concrete shelter.
