I was only four years old. It was during the bombing of Exeter in the Spring of 1942. We were in our home during the middle of the night when the sirens went off, and the bombs started to drop. My father was already out on the streets as he was an A.R.P warden. We all piled into the Morrison shelter in the 鈥渇ront room鈥� and stayed there.

The house was shaking, and then my father came in and said everyone out and into the church hall opposite. My mother had done some toast with treacle on, and with this in my hand out we went, and in the confusion, I missed the church hall!!

I was wandering the nearby streets and always remember I was eating my cold toast with treacle on, when a nun, who was in charge of the church hall, found me and took me back to the church hall.

The rest of the night is a blank, but we all survived and survived the war. My parents lived into old age, and I am now 68 years old, and I am still very active and eating cold toast with treacle on!!
