Mrs Richards was my Mother; she served in the Women鈥檚 army in France in W.W.1.
My parents moved to live in India in 1930 and when War was declared she served in the WVS.
In 1942 Lady Monkton started to form the Women鈥檚 Auxiliary Corps (India) called WAC(I) and with her previous experience my Mother joined.
It was a body of Women living in India be it European or Indian and they were trained to replace service personnel in all three forces, Army, Navy, Air Force.
The WAC(I) lived at home or in hostels but their support work was invaluable in the war.
My Mother bought a contingent of WAC(I) personnel to the UK for the VJ original parade and was presented to the Queen and King.
A small band of WAC(I) meet annually for a reunion lunch in the Victory Services club in London, but numbers decrease each year.
I too was a WAC(I) towards the end of the War and lived at home. My Mother was the equivalent of a full Colonel and Army H.Q in Poona.
All a long time ago.
