My father was in the Merchant Navy during the war in the engine rooms. The only ship I remember him being on was the Pretoria Castle, which had been converted as a training aircraft carrier. I think they flew Swordfish and Fairy Baracudas from it.

I know he once landed in Vancouver, and went across America by train. He visited Jack Dempsey鈥檚 bar in New York.

He was on the Russian and Atlantic convoys, and was involved in the Italian landings. It was here that he picked up a German airman.

My dad brought some towels back from his travels, which I still use to this day.

One thing that still upsets me is that in the merchant navy, if your ship got sunk, your pay got stopped, which I think is terribly unfair.
