When we were at school there was a playground right around the school buildings and there were several air raid shelters scattered around the playground. One day we heard the air raid so we ran out to the shelter. As we were running German planes came over machine gunning the playground. I could actually see the man in the plane aiming and shooting. There was smoke and flames everywhere which came into the air raid shelters. There was a garden nursery next door and they shot at all of the glass. The noise was so frightening.
When we got home we鈥檇 had a bouncing bomb through our house and our father was in hospital. My father had actually been in bed because he was a policeman and had worked the night before. Something told him to get up out of bed and as he did the bouncing bomb came through the back of the house and forced his bed out of the house. It then bounced on over a coal yard and eventually killed 5 people. In the end my father was okay, he had just suffered from a few splinters. When the doodlebugs came over from France we would always stand still because they never came straight down...they sloped.
