THE BATH UNIT
During operations, one of the joys of life was a visit to the Division鈥檚 Bath Unit; this would set itself up in a central position, usually a barn, and the units of the Division would take it turns to go there; our turn would come about fortnightly if conditions allowed and we were not in action. We handed in our smelly shirts and underwear which we had worn continually since the last visit. and had a long, hot shower, after which we were given clean towels and clean shirts, vests and 鈥渄rawers, woollen long鈥 to last us until the next visit. Washing, cleaning teeth and shaving depended upon where we were and what we were doing; if we were actually fighting, of course we did without, but most of us took the opportunity when things quietened down to spruce ourselves up a bit; it was surprising what a lift that gave to our morale, even if we had to do it crouching in a slit trench, although we didn鈥檛 always have enough water with us to be able to do that. Going to the loo produced some problems when we were in action; while we didn鈥檛 want to use the slit trenches we were in, sometimes we just had to because going out and hiding behind a tree would have been highly dangerous. Fortunately, we all carried a shovel for digging trenches and these enabled us to remain fairly hygienic.
