As a 7 year old I was with my mother, 2 aunts, and my 2 cousins while we stayed in a wooden holiday bungalow in Ovingham.
Nearby in Prudhoe was a chemical factory, manufacturing agricultural chemicals for use upon farms. Yet the German鈥檚 knew only that it was producing chemicals and believed it to create chemicals for munitions, making it a prime air raid target.
We were sitting upon the peak of a hill next to the bungalow when the loud roar of an engine, the roar of a daylight German raid, became ever closer. Directly above our heads streaked the German Bomber, close enough for us to see it鈥檚 occupants, in particular the rear gunner. The gunner could have annihilated us in seconds yet instead we saw his hand raise high, and wave warmly to his hilltop audience. Naturally, as children we waved back - even if my mother was not so friendly as rushed us into the bungalow.
This is a memory that has stuck with me always as it showed to me that there were some friendly Germans out there!
