I lived at a public house called the Hare and Hounds in Lincoln High Street. When I was 8 or 9 my mother made me an army uniform, the rifle was a replica of 303 LeeEnfield, made by my older brother and his friend. I collected for the Red Cross. Standing outside the pub on guard I used to march up and down, I knew all the rifle drills.
During the course of 1940 - 1941 I collected 拢100. One Sunday night the crowd watching me got so big, it blocked the traffic. The police had to ask my mother to bring me in so they could disperse the crowd.
