Jan 1. Done wire splice during forenoon. Got in about 12 am went alongside the Pindos. Got oil in at about 2.50. Weather calming down. Had supper. Got underway at 7.15 pm with Pindos doing a (E. sweep towards Benghazi. Kept middle.

Jan 2. Kept forenoon in defence. Weather rough. Picked up convoy of ships. Very slow. In sight of land all day. Kept first dog. Sea still rough. Kept first. Very cold on lookout. Left convoy at 2200, steamed back at 16 kts towards Tobruk.

Jan 3. Kept morning. Very cold. Picked up another convoy at 8 am going west about 14 ships. Weather calming down. Kept afternoon last dog. Very cold during the night. Still with convoy. Very cloudy and showery.

Jan 4. kept middle also forenoon. Weather slightly rough. Slept in afternoon. Kept first dog. Went to dusk action stations at 6 pm until 7 pm. All quiet. Had spean? Fighters flying around. Kept first. Very cold. Left convoy at 2200, steamed to Benghazi at 16 kts for oil.

Jan 5. Kept morning. Raining for about an hour. Fell out at 0745. Arrived at Benghazi at 0800-dropped anchor. Very heavy swell, couldn鈥檛 oil. Working part of the ship during the forenoon. Make and mend in the afternoon. Had all night in. Got underway at 10.00, went Tobruk to oil.

Jan 6. Kept forenoon in defence. In sight of Derna coast all the time searching for a battle practice target. Arrived at Tobruk at 5 pm. Went alongside oiling wreck. Oiled stayed there all night. Had night in.

Jan 7. Was cook of mess until 9 15. Stood by wires and fenders. Shifted ship at 0950. Went alongside another wreck, which was alongside the jetty. Finished at 1200. Had make and mend. Done watching. Had all night in. Leave to starboard watch from 1515. Concert at 8.30 pm ashore.

Jan 8. Left Tobruk at 0815. Proceeded to sea steaming east to pick up convoy and cruiser believed to be Carlisle. Kept forenoon in defence. Kept first dog. Weather very rough. Speed 17 knots. Met convoy at 6-50 going west. Joined it. Kept first. Ahead sea all the time.

Jan 9. Kept morning watch. Weather calming down. Had yellow warning at 7-20 went to action stations for about ten minutes. Fell out at 7-50. Other convoy going east was attacked. Kept afternoon. Kept last dog. All quiet during the night.

Jan 10. Kept middle watch, sea calm. Kept forenoon Beaufighter escort. Kept first dog. Clocks went back one hour at 6p.m. kept extra half hour. Kept first watch. Altered course at 4-45 p.m. steering north.

Jan 11. Kept morning watch passed Mount Etna at 0800. Snow on the summit lovely sight. Entered Straights of Messina at 0700. Passed Reggio. Also a yank cruiser and two destroyers. Came out of straights at 12-30. Passed two volcanic isles. Kept last dog.

Jan 12. Kept middle, all quiet. Cleaned into dress of the day at 7-30. Fell out from defence at 0815. Got wires ready for going alongside oiler, arrived Naples at 0900. Passed Mt Vesuvius at about 8-30am. Oiled working part of ship. Make and mend. Anchored in Naples Bay.

Jan 13. Was painting during the forenoon, finished at 12-noon. Make and mend in the afternoon. Was duty part wrote a letter. Aircraft continuously passing over all day. Could see Vesuvius at night.

Jan 14. Working part of ship during forenoon. Make and mend. Went out at 1615 and anchored in bay all night. Kept first dog first and morning. Could see glow in the sky from the front line.

Jan 15. Got up the hook at 0700 went into Naples Bay. Port watch fell out. Stbd watch took the ship alongside oiler at 0815. Scrubbed mess out for rounds. Left harbour at 1600 with Janus. Done patrol all night. Kept last dog.

Jan 16. kept middle. Kept forenoon until 0840. Fell out cleaned into No 5 took ship into harbour. Didn鈥檛 oil. Piped down at o850. Afternoon off. Wrote a letter. Had all night in. dropping 1lb charges every 20 minutes. Couldn鈥檛 sleep.

Jan 17. Went defence stations at 0615 for an hour. Fell out and got wires ready went alongside oiler. Bracken came alongside us. Had breakfast. Left oiler at 0950 anchored. Uphook 11am. Went alongside Spartan for water left 2pm. Anchored. Went out on patrol 1750 with Grenville.

Jan 18. Cleaned into No5 for entering harbour. Prepared for going alongside oiler but it was cancelled. Went out again with Belolo Glencarn etc. Kept forenoon in defence. Saw about 30 Mitchels flying over convoy. Supposed to be on exercise. Went to dusk action. Kept first.

Jan 19. Kept morning. Went to dawn action stations at 0620 until 0715. Went to defence after alarm bells went at 1000. Closed up to action stations. Fell out nothing happened. Done dummy invasion at Salerno during morning. Joined up with Bulolo. Went back to Castalana. Anchored.

Jan 20. Working part of ship during forenoon. Make and mend. Weighed anchor 1345. Went to Naples for oil. Arrived there at 2-20. Left again at 4pm. Went back to Castalana anchored. Lower deck cleared at 7-45pm Captain told us we were making a landing 30 miles S. of Rome two divisions.

Jan 21. Working part of ship in forenoon. Weighed anchor at 1130 got under way over 45 invasion barges. Total over 80. Kept afternoon in defence. Went dusk action. Went action stations at 10 pm. All night. Troopers landed commandos at 0200 zero hour. We took them back at 0600. Very successful landing.

Jan 22. Could see flashes from the front line. We left barges at about 5am. Picked up empty troopers at 0600 and three more Hunts. Passed reinforcements going in. Kept forenoon. Arrived Naples at 2-30pm. Oiled and anchored. Left again at 1815 with Tetcott etc. 22knots to where the landing was.

Jan 23. Kept morning. Anchored at about 1230 with other barges. Went to dawn action stations. Could see gunfire going on ashore. Weighed anchor at 0715. Done sweep with Bracken Tetcott for subs outside ships. Had numerous red warnings. Went to dusk action. Jerry bombing ships near the beaches. Patrolled all night.

Jan 24. Went to dawn action. Sea rough. Had numerous red warnings all day. Bombing going on near the beaches. Went to action stations at 4-30pm. Red warning. Bololo came out with a few barges. Dusk attack began, lasted for 1陆 hours. Pretty grim, about 5 ships hit. Had supper at 7pm. Went back to Naples. Was glad.

Jan 25. Arrived Naples at 0830. Passed two hospital ships, one had bomb hit but no casualties. Oiled broke 3 wires alongside Grenville. Anchored at 1215. Went to sea at 4-15 with Bracken etc. Bololo destination believed Malta. Kept last dog middle. All quiet during the night.

Jan 26. Broke into cruising stations at 0800. Had forenoon in the mess. Arrived at Agusta with one trooper oiled and anchored. Four others carried on with escort. Passed Mt Etna in forenoon was covered in snow. Had all night in.

Jan 27. Working part of ship in forenoon, on funnel. Make and mend in afternoon. Very cold wind blowing from north. Hoisted whaler at 5-15. 2nd port duty part. Had all night in. Wind died down. Lovely night.

Jan 28. Working part of ship during the forenoon. Done gun drill at 9am. Shifted alongside the wall for water at 8-45. Got ammunition from A mag to B mag. Got rid of empty鈥檚. Went to sea at 1200 with convoy of ships to UK, 5 more joined up at 5pm destination Algiers or Oran. Kept first. Heavy swell.

Jan 29. Kept morning. Passed Pantelaria at 0600. Passed cape Bon at 11-50 weather calming down. Kept hugging coast all day. 16 troopships all told. Other escort ships joined at 5pm. Went to dusk action. Fell out at 7-10. Kept last dog. All quiet during the night.

Jan 30. Broke into cruising at 0800. 2nd port kept forenoon. Was cook of mess. Sea lovely no wind. Passed the Atlas Mountains snow on some of them. Sent handbag for Mary. Kept first dog in cruising. Passed Algiers at 1800. Went to dusk action. All quiet. Kept first.

Jan 31. kept morning. Convoy split up about 9 went to Gib. We took six to Oran. Sea calm. Arrived at 1200. went to a buoy. Shifted ship went alongside oiler at 3-50pm. Left at 1800. went alongside Pindus. Stbd watch given leave from 1800 until 2200. Pictures on Yank depot ship.

Feb 1. Working part of ship during forenoon. Done gun drill until 1030. Painted guardrails. Went to dinner. Make and mend in afternoon. Went to pictures on the yank depot ship. Saw The gangs all here. Had all night in.

Feb 2. Working part of ship during the forenoon. Washing paintwork. Make and mend in afternoon. Was duty part. Tetgott left at 3pm. Leave to stbd watch until 2230. Had a hair cut at 4pm. Had all night in. Pictures for stbd watch on yank depot ship.

Feb 3. Was cook of mess until 0915. fell in stowed cork nets on skids. Started to make a pendant for life saving nets. Went to sea at 1130 with troopers also(deleted) and Aldenham. Pindos. Ist stbd in cruising in afternoon. Kept first dog first in defence. Sea like a millpond, not a ripple.

Feb 4. Kept morning. Fell in at 0915. Done eye splice for strop on nets. Finished at 1030. Kept afternoon. Tested small arms at 11am. Went to dusk action stations at 6-15pm. Kept last dog all quiet. Gale warning 50 M.P.H forecast.

Feb 5. Sea started to get rough at about 2am. Sea mountainous during forenoon washing down the mess deck about three feet of water. Everything wet. Wind rising everybody chocca. Kept first dog and first sighted islands north of west Sicily.

Feb 6. Kept morning. Weather easing down. Broke into cruising stations at 7-20. 2nd port kept rest of morning. Fell in at 0915 squared off the upper deck after gale. Arrived in Naples at 11-50am. Anchored. Got underway went and oiled at 1-50. Anchored after. Kept sentry from 10-12pm.

Feb 7. Working part of ship during forenoon, on seizing for carley rafts, very cold. Make and mend in afternoon. No bread onboard, couldn鈥檛 get any. Dog biscuits for tea. Went to sea at 1800. Took troopers back to Oran. Delhi came with us. Kept first.

Feb 8. Kept morning passed Stromboli lava running down it. Broke into cruising at 7-20. Kept rest of morning on bridge. Entered straits of Messina at 0800. (?ne) out at 8-30. saw Etna covered in snow. Passed Catania and Agusta. Sea getting rough. Kept afternoon. Last dog.

Feb 9. Kept middle. Sea very rough. Gale. Kept forenoon. Washing down from bow to stern. Had to ease down. Kept first dog and first. Carley float was washed overboard. Grim down the mess decks. Increased speed at midnight. Passed Cape Bon and Alcien.

Feb 10. Kept morning. Weather calming down. Still strong wind blowing. Kept afternoon. Passed Bone and Atlas mountains. Kept afternoon and last dog. Went to dusk action stations at 6-15 until 7-10. Weather still very rough.

Feb 11. Kept middle still blowing hard. Off Algiers about 3am. Patrolled around. Got in rig of day. Took ship in harbour at 0800. Went alongside oiler. Cook all forenoon. Left oiler went alongside jetty at 1245. Shut down for boiler cleaning. All night in.

Feb12. Cook of the mess until 1050 no rounds. Joined up part of the ship. Got bread in. Tautened up manila. Went ashore at1-15 had a long walk out the county. Came aboard at 7. Enjoyed a good run ashore. All night in.

Feb 13. Cook of mess. Went to mass at barracks at 1050. Came back at 1115. Wrote letters after tea. One to Dad and Nora. Turned in at 10pm.

Feb 14. Cook of mess until 9-15. Fell in as stretcher party went out 94th general. Came back at 1200. Got 1939 1943 ribbons. Raining all day. Make and mend in afternoon. Duty part. Had all night in.

Feb 15. Cook of mess all forenoon. Got paid at 1200. Pouring rain all day. Didn鈥檛 go ashore. Leave until 2300.

Feb 16. Working part of ship during forenoon. Stopped raining, turned too in afternoon. Started painting superstructure aft. Went to canteen at 5-45. Saw The sky鈥檚 the limit, Fred Astaire and Joan Leslie. Came off at 2000. Had supper. Turned in.

Feb 17. Painting upper deck all forenoon. Make and mend for port watch. Left jetty at 5-30pm. Went out and anchored in the bay. Started raining at 8-30. Turned in at 9-50.

Feb 18. Port watch was called at 4-25am. Closed up to defence stations at 0445. Weighed anchor. Convoy consists of four troopers. Also about five hunts. Kept afternoon, sea rough. Gale warning. Kept last dog.

Feb 19. Kept middle and forenoon. Passed Bizerta at 0900, also a few ships. Kept first dog. Went to dusk action at 1800. Passed islands north of Sicily. Fell out at 1900. Kept first.

Feb 20. Kept morning. Sea calm. In sight of Capri. Stbd watch fell out from defence at 8-15. Was going to oil at 0900 but went straight out again with Pindos and Canarious doing sweep for sub south of Anzio. Dusk action at 1740. Kept last dog.

Feb 21. Kept middle. Still patrolling for submarine up and down coast. Kept forenoon. Done washing in afternoon. Arrived in harbour at 2pm. Oiled. Got letters from home sea mail. Also photo. Went to sea again at 4-30 with same troopers destination Oran. Kept first.

Feb 22. Kept morning. Passed pants. Kept afternoon. Passed Bizerta during dogs. Kept last dog. Sea calm.

Feb 23. Kept middle. Sea calm. Kept forenoon. Passing Atlas Mountains covered in snow. Laid smoke screen at dusk. Passed Algiers at about 8pm. Kept first. All quiet.

Feb 24. Kept morning. Broke into cruising stations at 0800. 2nd stbd closed up. Cleared up flats. Pot mess for dinner. Arrived at Oran, oiled at 2pm. Left again at 4-30pm. Joined with convoy of 108 ships to Gib, biggest convoy ever.

Feb 25. Kept forenoon in cruising. Raining, not very grand on lookout. Chasing stragglers up. In sight of coast of Spain. Very high mountains. Wrote two letters. Took up position at stern of convoy. Kept first in defence.

Feb 26. Cruising stations at 0800. Sighted Gib. Very strong wind. Went near liberty boat dropped whaler took German prisoner on board. Kept afternoon in cruising. Passed Gib with convoy. Turned back at 5-11. Went into Gib. Oiled. Took mail ashore had a few wets.

Feb 27. Cook of mess during forenoon. Raining most of the time. Saturdays routine until 11am. All ratings going ashore had to be vaccinated. No church party. Gale started full force at 9pm. Raining hard. Leave until 2300 didn鈥檛 go. Talks on speakers very good.

Feb 28. Raining during most of forenoon. Make and mend. Cleared up in afternoon. No leave. Shifted out into the bay at 5-50 anchored. Anchor watches. Got had all night in.

Feb 29. Got under way at 4am. Stbd watch to defence. Convoy of 17 troopers going east. Sea rough. Kept forenoon in cruising seas coming in on G.P. and waist. Reved up at 4pm, went outside Oran. Picked up about three more ships, rejoined the convoy.
