My older brother, younger sister and myself were evacuated from Seaford in East Sussex, to Bedford. My sister and I were put with a family as a last resort, being the only two children left. I remember the double bed had very scratchy blankets, not sheets. Fortunately we were only there a few days, but the day we were moved, the bed was changed, and beautifully embroidered sheets and pillow cases were put on it.

I was happy at the next place, but my sister and brother wanted to go home, so after a short while my father insisted we all went home. The night we arrived home there was a lot of gunfire, and I was very frightened. To me Bedford seemed very safe and I cried to go back, but of course I didn't. Later, my father rented a Peartree Cottage in Litlington. My mother, sister and I stayed there for quite a while, it had a lovely smell to the cottage -- old, but not musty. The cottage is still there -- I wonder if it still smells the same?
