When they bombed Nottingham my mother was recovering from a stroke, I got her down into the cellar but I couldn鈥檛 bear it down there, so once I knew she was ok I went back up stairs. From my bedroom window I could see all the fires around the city. There was Boots Fire Station, Meadow Lane, and St Christopher鈥檚 Church. They really made a mess of St Christopher鈥檚. I think they were trying to get the railway line. The little terrace at the bottom of our street was blown down, the next day the butcher鈥檚 freezer was hanging out a window. Our window blew in at home as we didn鈥檛 close the shutter.
I should have been called up but mother died, I was 20 years old.
I remember learning about incendiary bombs, in St Anns, I had to lie on my tummy with my gas mask on. It seems funny now but it wasn鈥檛 funny at the time really.
None of my family came to any harm.
