My father, Capt. M C Teasdale-Buckell was a working member of the Admiralty in London. When war was declared, the Admiralty was moved to Bath. My Pa thought we'd be safer in Bristol, so we lived in a 6th floor flat in Clifton Court.

However, because of the Docks, Bristol was bombed horrendously. We watched the whole of Bristol burning from the top of our flats and I'll always remember the smell of burning wood. One other thing I remember was when the Americans came over here, there were many used condoms lying in the road! I was only 14 years old and kept on a tight string by my parents, so I didn't know what they were - but my sister told me!!
