The month of March in 1942 saw great sadness and a little joy for our family for on March 11th my cousin 21 year old Sgt John Town of the RAFVR was killed with four other crew members when their Lockheed Hudson Mk111 aircraft crashed in poor visibility some 2 miles east of Coltishall airfield in Norfolk.
John was the turret gunner and wireless operator onboard the Light Bomber as it returned from a 'ferrying' excercise, the aircraft was a complete 'write-off' and the whole crew were killed instantly.
On the 14th 0f March I was born in the mining village of Glasshoughton where my father and john's father were brothers! the whole family expected my parents to name me after my brave older cousin but they had already decided and agreed on my name, however in 1943 my younger brother was born and he was givren the name of our RAF hero!
Sgt: John Town was buried with full military honours in the Cemetery at Castleford in West Yorkshire and his grave is regulary visited and attended by all members of our family.
