It was the height of the doodlebugs. I was in the WRENS, stationed at Stanmore, and on a day off could easily get home. On this particular occasion I helped Mother with the housework by cleaning the windows. I said to her at the time, "If I do that you will be bombed".

The next day I rang Mother, as I always did, to see if they were all right. She said, "You were right - we had a doodlebug three doors down and all the windows are shattered!"
