I was 9 when the War started and we lived in Chipperfield, Hertfordshire. My friend Jack and I had been to Sunday School and when we got back to my home my mother said "Jack you had better get home, there's a War starting". At that time there was no air raid siren, but there was a maroon in the nearby field - all of a sudden the maroon went off and Jack shot out of the gate.
We were quite near RAF Bovingdon, where there were some Americans. They had Mosquitos and one of them had a red tail.
A doodlebug came over and was going to land but the Mosquito chased it and it went down.
My Dad was in charge of the local fire brigade and was on duty at night. The planes used to come over London at night, circle thengo back. I also remember bombers going over from Luton, the RAF chased after them.
On D-Day all the allied planes had black and white strips.
