I lived at Barking, Essex but needed to get to Beverley, Yorkshire for 8am one Monday morning. I set off early on the Sunday morning but, when I got to Barking, I discovered that there were no underground trains running. I managed to get a Green Line bus to Aldgate. There was smoke coming out of Aldgate Station and there were fires from Poplar to Aldgate. A Dornier (German plane) had crashed down onto the main road between the dock gates and the hospital. It had been the heaviest bombing recorded on the Saturday night.

I managed to get a taxi to Kings Cross Station. There was only one line operating and the station had almost been destroyed. Despite this I still managed to get to Beverley on the Sunday night. Hull had been badly bombed so many people were going out to Beverley from the city. I had been given three addresses of places for Bed and Breakfast but they were all full. I was directed to the centre where they were looking after all the people who had escaped from Hull. A lady there took pity on me and took me home. She would not accept any payment for the B&B so I put the money I had saved into a missionary box. I managed to get to Beverley County Hall for 8am on the Monday. The transport system was all back to normal by the next Friday.
